About Thelema of Tulsa
Thelema of Tulsa is an independent, community-focused organization dedicated to the exploration and practice of Thelemic spirituality. We welcome individuals from all walks of life who are interested in the study and application of Thelema, magick, and esoteric traditions.
Our mission is to promote the Law of Thelema, support personal spiritual growth, and provide community for those interested or engaged in Thelemic practice. Through educational classes, rituals and discussions, we strive to create an inclusive space for new seekers and experienced practitioners alike.
As an autonomous group, we are not affiliated with any external religious bodies or organizations, such as O.T.O. or A∴A∴. We do not conduct initiations nor do we have a unique set of Mysteries that we teach. We are simply a group of Thelemites who enjoy discussing and practicing magick, yoga, and all things Thelema.
History and Foundations of Thelema
Thelema is a spiritual philosophy and practice developed in the early 20th century by English magician Aleister Crowley. In 1904, in Cairo, Egypt with his wife Rose, he claimed to have received the Book of the Law, a document announcing a New Æon in human progress and evolution. Central to Thelema is the principle, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law,” which encourages individuals to seek and fulfill their true purpose while respecting the inherent freedom of others.
For the rest of his life, Crowley set to work writing voluminously and developing what has become the canon of Thelema. One of Crowley’s goals with his work was to fuse “the method of science” with “the aim of religion.” He did just that. From writings on magical and yogic theory and practice to esoteric expositions of mythology and religion, to stories, poems and prose, the body of Thelemic literature is vast.
Since his death in 1947, Crowley’s reputation has grown even worse than it was during his life and his name often evokes reactions of fear or disgust. In recent years however we’ve seen this start to pass away. As humanity is continuously forced to adapt to the world’s rapidly shifting conditions, a new widespread interest in all things esoteric and occult has started to swell. It is our hope that in Thelema of Tulsa we can provide a space for interested people to explore these areas further with open-minded and experienced fellow seekers.
